What is Starlink?

Technology

Most satellite internet services come from single geostationary satellites that orbit the planet at 35,786 km. As a result, the round-trip data time between the user and satellite— also known as latency—is high, making it nearly impossible to support streaming, online gaming, or other high data rate activities.

Starlink is a constellation of more than 10,000 active satellites that orbit the planet much closer to Earth, at about 550 km, and cover the entire globe. Because Starlink satellites are in a low Earth orbit, latency is significantly lower—as low as 25 ms vs. 600+ ms.

Starlink’s optical space lasers transmit data throughout the Starlink constellation, providing continuous service in areas far from SpaceX ground stations—providing coverage for flights over the open ocean and in polar regions. Starlink’s constellation contains 9,000+ lasers transmitting 10Pb+ of daily data traffic. These lasers can sustain a 100Gbps connection per link, can connect to 5,300+ km (3,300 mi) apart, and maintain a mesh network with 99.99% uptime.
